UN Warns of “Mass Displacement” Due to Violence in Tripoli

The United Nations expressed its concerns yesterday regarding the “recent surge in violence” in Tripoli, warning of “significant risks of mass displacement” and “threats to civilians” in Libya.

In a statement, the International Organization for Migration called for an “immediate cessation of hostilities to ensure the safety and well-being of civilians in accordance with international humanitarian law.” The organization expressed its apprehension over the escalating violence in Tripoli and the mobilization of armed groups in the surrounding areas.

The spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration stated, “We welcome reports of a ceasefire and urge its full and unconditional adherence to protect the rights and dignity of all individuals in the affected regions.”

This comes as intense clashes between competing armed groups in the Libyan capital have significantly decreased late Wednesday into Thursday, following a resurgence of violence from Tuesday night onward that resulted in at least six fatalities in recent days.

A Libyan Interior Ministry official reported that fighting persisted extensively from Tuesday night into Wednesday across several areas of Tripoli, involving Deterrence Forces and Brigade 444.
