On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump commented on Canada’s election day by reiterating his wish for the country to abandon its independence and join the United States.
He expressed on social media that Canada could become “the cherished fifty-first state… there would be no artificial borders. Imagine how wonderful this land could be.”
Trump added, “Free movement without borders. Everything would be positive, no negatives. Just how it should be!”
He further stated that “the U.S. can no longer support Canada with hundreds of billions of dollars annually as we did in the past. That only makes sense if Canada becomes a state!”
Canada is holding critical elections on Monday to choose a government leader capable of addressing an unprecedented crisis with the U.S. and negotiating with President Trump, whose trade war and threats of annexation have raised concerns in the neighboring country.
Although Trump’s name does not appear on Canadian ballots, he looms large in the minds of all Canadians.
Trump urged Canadian voters to “choose the man who has the strength and wisdom to cut your taxes in half and boost your military power to the highest level in the world, for free.”
