- Targets expansion to double size by 2030
- Includes a combination of Boeing 787 and 777X models
- Expected to integrate into the fleet starting in 2028
Etihad Airways has committed $14.5 billion for the acquisition of 28 Boeing aircraft.
Since the beginning of 2023, the national airline of the UAE has been expanding its fleet as part of a strategic initiative aimed at doubling its size by the year 2030.
This agreement encompasses a selection of Boeing 787 and 777X aircraft, all equipped with GE Aerospace engines and accompanied by a comprehensive services package, as stated by the airline.
Antonoaldo Neves, the CEO of Etihad Airways, indicated that the new aircraft are slated to join the fleet in 2028 and will enhance long-term network development plans.
Additionally, the airline is in the process of finalizing an extensive strategy that will extend to 2035, as noted in the statement.
The current fleet of Etihad, which is backed by Abu Dhabi’s $225 billion wealth fund, ADQ, is nearly 100 aircraft strong.
In statements made last month, Neves informed Reuters that the airline intends to incorporate 20 to 22 new planes within the current year.
Earlier this week, Boeing secured its largest deal for widebody aircraft with Qatar Airways, which signed for 160 jets along with options for an additional 50, valued at $96 billion during a visit by former President Trump to the Gulf nation.
AviLease, an aircraft leasing company owned by the Public Investment Fund, also reached an agreement with Boeing for up to 30 Boeing 737 Max jets.
During President Trump’s visit to Abu Dhabi, agreements totaling over $200 billion were established between US and UAE companies. The president also traveled to Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The reported $200 billion in commercial agreements between the US and UAE raises the total investment commitments announced during the Gulf visit to $2 trillion, according to a statement from the White House.
